110 years ago, on March 27th, 1912, the First Lady Helen Taft and Viscountess Chinda met at the Northern end of the reflecting pool in Washington DC and planted two of the more than three thousand cherry trees gifted by Japan. This symbol of friendship began the now renowned Washington DC Cherry Blossom Festival which continues today.
